Cosmic Egg and Pornland
Gershwin Room, Esplanade Hotel
- Friday 4 May, 2001 -
Cosmic Egg and Pornland form a great line-up. Both are made up of tight, professional
performers, confident on stage and generous to their audience. If you're looking
for a band that can pull together great lyrics, funky beats and a fun performance,
these bands will more than satisfy your entertainment needs.
You know how Friends tries to get together a group of personalities to compliment and set each other off? These bands manage what Soapies have failed for years. Every person on stage is part of the performance. Each musician has created a character: Cosmic Egg is led by dreadlock queen, Pradeepa, who becomes bondage mistress and housewife; Pornland is inhabited by a security guard who looks suspiciously like John Holmes, a stunning cape, and plenty of luscious white lycra. There's no competition, or between-song confusion. It's great to see performers work so well together; like cheese, bread and a toasted sandwich maker, great individually, put them together and they combine to make something greater.
All work generously for the audience and adore the applause. Every artist up there loves the stage. They gave so much energy to the crowd on Friday, the performance was truly dynamic. Many a sexy dance move was shared, while much sweat beaded.
Cosmic Egg's lyrics are about city-dwellers struggling to attain ethically sound lives. It's great to hear lyrics about politics that aren't angry and overwhelmed. Cosmic Egg don't sing about revolutions, they sing about day-to-day, unemployed life, about hating Myers but shopping at Coles. They're lyrics you can relate to and laugh.
Pornland manage to create a seventies concert atmosphere so well it's almost eerie. Was I sure this was the Gershwin Room, 2001? I kept expecting someone to be lowered down from the ceiling, sparklers ablaze. Perhaps next time…
A great night was had by all in the Gershwin Room last Friday. Those who wanted to boogie revelled in the funk. Those who wanted to scream and adore let full rein. Those who came to watch and appreciate a great performance were not let down. And all who love to hear great original material delivered by talented musicians left blissfully content.
Definitely acts to check out.
