comedy history

We (Pradeepa and Clint) stumbled onto the comedy scene quite by accident. We had no intention of becoming comedians.

In mid 1998 a friend of ours (Melinda Deanwood from the band "MINT") was organising a benefit gig for the Anorexia and Bulemia Nervosa Foundation of Victoria. We figured that our song "You don't have to be skinny to be sexy" would be perfect, so we asked to be on the bill. Well as fate would have it, we were between band line-ups at the time, and there was no acoustic stage, so we said "Put us the comedy stage", which she did. We performed "Who Asked You?" and "Skinny", plus a brief skit with a drag queen friend of ours, Anna Key. That was on Sunday 30th August, 1998.

The M.C. during our performance was outrageous funnywoman Bev Killick, who liked us enough to invite us to perform a bunch of gigs at the comedy room she was booking at the time, "Dave", in South Melbourne. We found everyone in the comedy scene to be extremely friendly and welcoming. Soon we spread to other comedy rooms around town, specialising in the opening music bracket some comedy venues used to kick the night off. After a while we moved into the more regular 10 minute spots like the other comics. Our sets at this time consisted of  funny songs and their intros, but very few jokes outside of the songs.

As time went on we introduced more stand-up (i.e. jokes without music), sometimes up to half of our stage time. While we found this challenging and rewarding, we soon realised that funny original songs is our forte, and something that very few comics actually do (most comics who use music do parodies).

There are two people without who's support and guidance, cosmic egg probably wouldn't exist as a comedy duo. One is Bev Killick, and the other is Trevor Hoare, the man who ran Espy Comedy for nearly 10 years. Trev gave us lots of gigs, advice and love. We feel privileged to have Bev and Trev as friends. Their support and encouragement has been invaluable.

We performed regularly at Espy Comedy for over a year, where we were able to improve our skills and material. Trev was tragically sacked by Espy management because his first priority was to provide a breeding ground for comedy, not making money. We performed at Espy Comedy's huge farewell gig, Tuesday 29th August, 2000, almost two years to the day after our first ever comedy gig.

Although writing and performing comedy takes up a lot of time and energy, we love it too much to stop. Visit out gigs page to  find out about our upcoming comedy appearances at: www.cosmicegg.com.au/gigs
